1. Get out into nature

Getting out into nature has an incredible way of instantly refreshing the mind and body. Whether you decide to spend more time outdoors by walking on the beach, sitting on a patch of greenery or hiking on the mountain, getting out into nature is one of the best things you can do. If you don’t always have time to get out of the house, then be sure to add some indoor plants to your home and office space - your mental health will thank you!

2. Creating a work-life balance

We know, it's easier said than done but it's definitely not impossible. There are so many tips and tricks out there to help one create a work-life balance but our favourite is using books and apps to help you out. It's only human to have a reminder of something to do for work crop up in the middle of your downtime. Our solution for this is to use an app (or simply a notepad) where you can jot down those niggling ideas so that you can deal with them come Monday morning. It’s also helpful to set clear “on” and “off” times - especially if you are working from home. Make a conscious effort to switch off your PC or laptop the moment you finish work for the day. Resist the urge to pick up your laptop by putting it off and packing it on a book-shelf or in a drawer, giving you and your machine a break!

3. Rest

And no, we don’t mean sleep. Rest can mean many different things to different people but essentially, it is doing something that makes you feel good, calm and relaxed. Whether it be a light exercise, writing or spending time on the couch with a book, give your body and mind a break by relaxing and unwinding.

4. Make more time to do what you love

Whether it be painting, skipping, dancing or reading (we really mean anything), schedule time in your diary everyday where you do something solely for yourself. Put away distractions, turn off your phone for an hour and spend time immersing yourself in an activity that makes you happy. You can also use this time to cross off number 1 and get out in nature!

5. Get rid of the clutter

While mental and emotional space is super important, none of that can happen if you are surrounded by physical clutter. The new year is a great time to take charge of your space, rearrange your home and bring in some freshness. It is amazing how just removing a few items from your home can affect your mental health.

Often, items clutter around us slowly and before we know it, our homes no longer serve as a calm environment. If you find yourself in this position, then set aside a weekend this month (try to get it done in one weekend to avoid prolonged mess) and repack your closets, cupboards and clean up your home. If there are pieces of furniture that you haven't really used over the past year but take up a lot of space, then consider putting them in storage in the meantime. A great example of this is your kids' toys that they no longer play with but have sentimental value or that big dining table that could easily be replaced by one that is half the size. Another easy, space-saving swop could be your at-home office desk which very often could be stored and replaced with a smaller one.

Once you have some furniture items that you can do without, why not consider storing them away securely until you need them again? At Rent-A-Store we offer a competitive process and an array of secure, central and well-built storage units. Visit our website for more information and take the steps towards a clutter-free home.
