Figure out how much furniture you need to store

Before renting a storage unit, take some time to make a note of exactly how much furniture you need to store. We suggest listing the items and their sizes as well as any other handy tips about the item such as whether or not it folds up, if it can be taken apart (like a couch or TV cabinet) and if it is fragile or not. It might also be helpful to include other notes such as whether or not you will need to cover the furniture in bubble wrap (more on that below) and if it can be flat-packed.

Once you have your thorough list and know how much space your furniture items will take up, then check our furniture storage page to see the various sizes of units we have on offer to help you effectively store your furniture.

Be smart about where you store

Furniture is one of the biggest things we own that are worth quite a bit of money, so there is no reason why you should rent a unit that does not offer extra protection to give you peace of mind. At Rent-A-Store, we have 24 hour security cameras and controlled access, ensuring that your stored furniture will always be safe no matter where you are in the world.

Moving away from home? No problem! We’ve got many different storage unit locations across Gauteng, ensuring that you choose the facility that is right for you! To make things even easier, we also offer free move-in transport and 10 boxes to help you pack your items securely.

Plan your storage space

Now that you have your storage unit, be smart about how you utilise your storage space. Store the furniture pieces that you think you might not need very soon at the back of the unit along with the bulkier items. At this stage, it is also very important to carefully consider when you might need to use items again. If you have pieces like a TV cabinet or a dining table that could be taken apart and you know that you won’t need them for quite some time, then we suggest taking them apart and flat-packing them into your unit to help you save even more space.

You should also use the walls of your unit to maximise the space and push couches or mattresses against the walls so that you can effectively store things on them or next to them. If you have a bigger furniture piece like an 8-seater dining table or even a high coffee table, then make use of the space under and on top of the item. Storing smaller items like coffee tables, side cabinets and even chairs that have been placed laying down on the ground works great and gives you a lot more room in the unit. Office furniture like desks and cabinets are generally easier to store since they can easily be packed on top of each other.

It’s also important that you use the space within the items to create more space. For example, if you have a few office desks with a built-in cabinet, then use the cupboard space to store other items you might not need, like instruction manuals, screws (from anything you might have flat-packed) and extra cleaning or dusting supplies to keep on hand should you visit the unit again.

Cover efficiently

Once you’ve placed your furniture item in storage, be sure to cover bigger, softer pieces with cloth or old bedding. This works well for couches, headboards, and even pouffes and footstools. It’s super important to cover furniture items. Even though storage units are secure and safe, you want to protect them from dust. We suggest going to your nearest factory or tailor and asking for some fabric scraps. Even a long length of fabric can make the world of difference when it is wrapped around the legs of a chair.

If you have any furniture with glass inlays then be sure to cover it in layers of fabric and some bubble wrap. This also prevents scratching (from moving furniture around) and saves your shins if you are in a hurry!
