Plan

No matter the size of your storage unit, taking some time out of your day to properly plan how you will be going to pack it will make things a lot easier for you when you actually move in. We recommend making a list of every single item that you want to put in your storage unit and write next to it whether it needs to be packed in a box, a bag or if it can just stand on its own (like furniture). This not only helps you see how many items will need to be packed up, but also gives you a clear idea on what size storage unit you will require.

Get some storage products

Set out some time to buy a few essential storage items like plastic storage boxes (the ones that are stackable and with wheels are our favorite) and plastic bags in various sizes to make packing up your possessions easier. If you can, we also suggest getting a simple draw set (plastic is fine) and some shelving (you can pick up some great aluminum shelving online at an affordable cost) to make your unit easier to pack and navigate. While these things are not necessary, it does come in hand if you will be using the unit as a long-term solution and will help you easily find the items you need when you visit the unit again.

Pack smart

As you pack your items into their boxes, make a list of exactly what you are adding to each box, bag, and shelf so that you can refer back to it if the need arises. We recommend printing a copy of this list, laminating it (or putting it in a clear folder) and leaving it in your unit so that you always have something to refer back to. This also makes it easier on a loved one if they need access to the unit as they will just need to skim the page to see what the unit contains. Another great organizing tip is to print out cards detailing the contents of each box and bag and sticking on the sides of the boxes. This simple step will save you loads of time and diminish the risk of you needing to unbox many boxes before finding what you need. Be sure to use sticky labels and permanent markers to ensure that your items are easy to find. If you will be packing furniture in your unit, then chances are that it will most likely take up tons of space. Make the most of the space you have by storing bulkier furniture like couches, cabinets and even appliances under larger furniture pieces (like a table). That way, you are utilizing as much space as possible and you can pack smaller furniture items like chairs and side tables on top of the larger table. This space-saving trick is also handy when you are storing valuables in your unit as it gives you easy places to hide important documents or belongings with ease!
