6 Top Tips to Eliminate Clutter and Chaos
25 August 2021

Oftentimes you might find yourself wandering through your home and come to the overwhelming realisation that it is fast becoming full of clutter. This has been a common occurrence during the work from home spike and surge in bulk-buying but can also happen after a big life change - like moving into a new home, starting a home-based business or even having a baby. If this is something that you are currently struggling with, then be sure to read our top 6 tips below on how to eliminate clutter and chaos and leave your home feeling fresh, clean, and spacious!
Do a deep clean
If your work allows it, take a day off before a weekend and dedicate that time to properly going through your home, including all of your rooms, cupboards and drawers and even your garage. While it sounds like a mammoth task, setting aside a few days to specifically clean out the clutter will not only give you peace of mind, but help you declutter and leave your space feeling clean, fresh and organised. We suggest going room by room so that you have peace of mind knowing that the clutter is not spilling over into the rest of the house.

Clean out your grocery cupboard
If you find that you hardly know what’s in your kitchen cupboards and fridge then it might be wise to make your grocery cupboards a part of your decluttering journey. Empty out all of your cupboards and categorise groceries into tinned foods, perishables and fresh. Check that opened bags of cereal, rice and pasta are still fresh and throw out anything that has passed its best before date. If you have perishable items that are approaching its best before date, then move it to the front of the cupboard to ensure that you are reminded to use it up. It's also super important to check your spice cupboard and toss anything that no longer smells fresh, has gone hard or lumpy or if the colour is no longer vibrant. Be sure to chuck out all of those condiment packages, old takeaway menus and even plastic takeaway utensils that we all seem to be guilty of holding onto.
Get some extra storage
If you find that repacking cupboards and draws just stresses you out and causes more clutter, then we suggest buying a few plastic storage containers that can hold bulkier items like duvets, sporting equipment or even out of season clothing. Packing away your coats and thick blankets when the weather warms up is a great way to organise your cupboards and make your space feel less overwhelming. Pack filled storage containers in your garage or stack them in the bottom of your closets so that you always have access to the items should you need them.
Donate or toss
While packing each room in your home, get a few boxes or bags to keep on hand so that you can easily decide between which items to donate or toss. If you have lots of paper or recyclable materials, then be sure to save them in a separate box to be recycled. Generally, when deciding on what to donate, we recommend thinking about when you last used or wore the item, whether or not it has sentimental value and if it is broken or not. Shoes and clothes that no longer fit can easily be donated to someone in need while fabric scraps, broken clothing and even loose socks can be chucked. Pack away sentimental items Items that you can’t donate or throw away because they hold sentimental value are often those that take up the most space in your home. If you find that you have some items of sentimental value, but they add to your clutter (like family albums, your mom’s wedding dress and even family furniture), then finding a safer, off-site storage option might be best - like in a storage unit near your home. This is also a great option for old books and computers or printers that you might not be using but can’t quite get rid of.
