How to Organise Your Work From Home Space for the New Year

Organise Your Work From Home Space

Now that most of us have been working from home for about 9 months and somewhat adjusted to this new way of living (and working), we thought it might help to share some tips and advice on how to clean up your space so that you enter the new year with peace of mind, knowing that your work-from-home situation is smoother and easier in 2021.

Chances are that when the majority of companies were letting staff work from their homes, many employees took it upon themselves to try and make the work from home situation an easy transition with new furniture, moving things around the home or even packing away some things to make space. Now that the year has come to a close, we’re sure that many of you have not been able to make the space as user friendly as you wanted or imagined it to be and simply never had time during the year to set aside a week and do it. Since many companies are winding down for some end of year rest, we thought it would be the perfect time to share how just a few days of planning and cleaning in your break will help you transition into the new year with ease and enjoy the rest of your time off!

Think about your day-to-day

Take out a pen and paper (or even your notes app) and jot down your day-to-day activities. How many times a day do you get up to stretch or find that you need to move away from your work-from-home space due to comfort? What are the tasks that you need to do and how does your environment help you with it? Does your job require you to work long hours, yet you find that you can't seem to concentrate in your space? All of these questions are important to consider when it comes to rearranging your space since they will help you make the best, most practical decisions to ensure that your work-from-home office works for you. Maybe you might need to move your desk near a window for better concentration or maybe it’s a case of making the area more comfortable with a back pillow or footrest, whatever it is, chances are that they will come to mind once you start asking yourselves these questions.

Think about the items you use every day and every week

While this might seem insignificant, looking at the items you use every day can be a great help in determining what you need to pack away to help declutter. Do you mainly work on your PC yet have an entire stationery kit on your desk that is just taking up space? Do you really need that extra screen or is it just taking up space? Small questions like this can help you make better choices when it comes clearing up your space. If the items on your desk or in your work-from-home space no longer make sense (like too many screens or the desk is way too big), then it might be worth putting them in a storage unit near you for easy access and to ensure that they are kept safe.

Think about the space

Consider your work-from-home area, whether it is an office space in your home or even the couch which you use as your ‘office’ think about how the space works (or doesn’t work) for you and what you need to do to make it more comfortable. If you do have space with a desk but the desk seems to be taking up the entire room, then it might be helpful to get a smaller desk or even try to move it around to make the most of the space available to you. Additional furniture like extra seating or storage boxes that are not being utilized is great examples of things that take up space without you even knowing it which in turn, can cause mental clutter and might distract you from working. While you might not want to get rid of them, consider taking them to a secure storage unit where you can keep them safe.

Tidy up your space

This might sound obvious but simply just looking around your home and tidying up can make the world of difference. Pack away books (or donate some of them), recycle old papers and cover-up loose wires to help give your home a streamlined look. If you do have some books and papers that you hardly use but need to keep, then consider packing them neatly into storage boxes and moving them to a storage unit where they will be safe from any damage.

This task should not only be limited to your office space though, if you have the time, then try to clean out and pack your closet, bathroom cabinet or kitchen cupboards to make some extra space in your home and lighten up your load.

Once you have made some space and decided on the furniture or homeware pieces you need to keep but would like to store, then add some life to your space by adding plants and calming wall art to help you kick start the new year with ease. If a storage unit is something that that could benefit you, then be sure to have a look at our website to view our wide range of storage units near you and find one that will suit your needs.
