House Moving Hacks: A Simple Checklist to Move House Easily Without Losing Your Mind
2 November 2021

Whether you’re single, coupled up or have kids, moving homes can be an overwhelming experience. Even if this is not your first time moving, the planning, packing, unpacking and settling in can take some time to get used to. If you find yourself in this situation right now, then be sure to check out our checklist below to move houses easily and stress-free!
Plan ahead
As soon as your move is confirmed, get started on working out a plan of action to make the move as seamless as possible. Even if you have 2 or more months before the move, taking time to sort out your admin and make all of the necessary plans will save you a lot of stress come moving week.

Get a small notebook that is dedicated to your move where you can write down everything that needs to be done. When it’s down on paper, there’s less to have to remember and stress about. We suggest dividing the book up into various sections that are either broken up into week-by-week to-do lists or even divided up per room in your home, or both! Whichever you choose, think about the kinds of tasks that need to be done per week as you move closer to moving day. For example, 5 weeks before the move, you could start organizing and clearing out each room in your home and make piles of items that can be thrown away, donated or kept. While this task is mighty, it will save you hours of time and stress as your moving day draws near.
Other items that may fall onto your checklist will be having the new home cleaned, getting your current home cleaned, painting over walls if it is a rental, envisioning the new space and thinking about how you are going to style it, sourcing good quality boxes and booking a moving agency.
Envision the space
As we mentioned above, a clever trick to do when moving is to envision the new space and figure out how you are going to pack and style it (it helps to take photographs of the new space and use the floor plans for measurements). Oftentimes, people tend to move into a new home with all their belongings, not really thinking about how it will fit into their new home (or if they even want it in their new home!).
2-3 Weeks before the move, sit with your notebook and jot down a list of all the items that you envision in your new home. Start with the bedrooms as these tend to be the easiest (bed, dresser, cots, carpets, etc) and move to the living room, bathroom and lounge. It might sound unnecessary and self-explanatory, but it comes in handy when your new bathroom has space for your washing machine whereas in your old home it needed to be in your kitchen!
Get some storage
Once you have decided on how to pack the house (it’s totally fine if you only have a rough idea), you will most likely be left with items that perhaps have no space in your new home or that you actually don't really want in your new space. This can be anything from furniture to an old mattress or electronic and sporting equipment that you no longer use but can’t really get rid of. If you do find yourself in this situation, then renting a storage unit for the short term until you are settled into your new home will be a great way to ease some of the burden, leaving you with less to cart into your new home!
