You can never plan enough

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, but planning is key to a smooth storage unit set up. It might seem trivial to map out how you will be packing your unit, but we promise that it makes a world of difference come move-in day. Make sure to visit your unit before you fully move in so that you can map out the available space. This way, you can get the perfect sized shelves, boxes and storage containers (if needed) and plan exactly how they will be packed. This not only helps when moving your valuables into the unit but makes returning and getting one of your possessions out again a smooth and simple trip since you’ll know exactly where it is.

Pack smart

When packing before your move, it is imperative to make a list of what is in each box. Many people make the mistake of believing that they will remember what is in each box, but this is a recipe for disaster. Make a note of what is in each box and save it on your phone (we recommend google drive) so that it is easily accessible. That way, if you ever need someone else to collect something at your unit, you can just share the link with them, and they’ll be all set! Remember to number each box as well! You can also write out a list and stick it onto the box itself. Cover the list in plastic or seal it with clear tape to avoid damage.

Storing clothes? Here’s how!

When storing clothes, it’s important to separate your items by fabric and season. This not only helps you to easily find items but ensures that all fabric is kept safe. Before packing them in your clear, plastic boxes (stay away from plastic bags!), be sure to line each box with cotton fabric. In some cases, we even suggest wrapping some of your clothes in the cotton fabric to help it last even longer. Buy a meter or 2 of cotton from a fabric store and cut it into 100cm squares to make this process easier! PS: Use leftover pieces of fabric as cleaning cloths at home and keep a few in the unit as dust cloths.

Keep your unit smelling fresh and clean

Before you start packing your unit (and then again afterwards), add a few cedar balls or silica packs around the unit to absorb moisture and smells. If you do decide to use cedar balls, then make sure that you don't add them into your storage boxes and rather around the room and on top of the boxes. You can also use the age-old trick of adding a few fabric-softening sachets around the room to keep it smelling great. You could also scatter a few drops of essential oil in the unit or leave a reed diffuser inside in a subtle scent to keep it smelling great.

Choose a reliable storage rental company

While it may be easy to rent a unit, we do recommend doing some research into the company you’ll be going with. Not only should you do the obvious like vet them and read reviews online, but we also recommend hopping on a phone call or sending them an email to see if they can offer what you need (this is also a great way to check customer service!). It’s also important to ensure that the storage company you go with has added benefits that take your needs into consideration. At Rent-A-Store, we know how stressful moving houses or offices can be and to help lighten the load, we not only offer free move-in transportation when you book a unit, but also offer a quick and easy online booking process… plus, we share some great tips and advice to help you move with ease!
